I would think so. I have a pair of kribs and the only time they get antsy is when they are breeding. I would just make sure there are plenty of natural territory lines.

Although a waterproof container shouldn't be to hard to come by.

I don't think so. I mean what is the difference between the pump pulling water through the pre filter sponge vs the sponges inside the canister? All the pump is doing us spinning in water.
