Most of the West African cichlids are perfectly suited to planted aquariums. Just stay away from the tilipia type cichlids.

I'm ot sure that's accurate. I've seen giant gouramis over two feet long, in fact often pushing three feet. Most the food type tilipias top out at eighteen inches or so.
