It's important in the sense it's sensible, and accurate feedback opposed to supporting something that isn't ok.
Also the tanks these days are not really up to par compared to those older tanks....

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. It's more of a personal preference. For fish only tanks i don't care for the spray bar, but planted tanks i think it helps distribute flow a little more...

If it were me, i would just run the filter, no plants, and see how long it takes to mature the filter til the parameters are just right for plants, and just stick to a regular weekly water change...
