I have some bits of it on the "floor" of the aquarium, but it eventually breaks down. I keep a bag of it in the filter, to give a blackwater tint. That's probably where you would want it.

You can try peat to bring down the pH.

For what it's worth, I too, have a fluorite/sand mix in my Amazon type tank. Plants seem to seem to like it quite a bit,and it looks very nice.
