I don't know. I've never really paid that much attention. I did read an article in which Amano said to trim all the old leaves from the rhizome when planting ferns to promote new growth.

The roots aren't really anything to be concerned with. They're just mostly for attachment. The rhizomes are the important part, which as BruceF said, you can just cut to whatever size you want.

Yep, I have an inline diffuser on the input of an Eheim 2075. Works well, no burps, no bubbles, no hiccups. YMMV depending on your filter.
