A friend of mine has a betta with fin rot, I was just wondering what the salt dosage should be for him? It's pretty mild right now, but I figured salt would be better than some fancy...

Plants use oxygen only at night, so your plants could be sucking the water dry of oxygen during the night. Happens all the time, run an airstone at night and you should be fine, or just get a filter...

Check out fluval's surface skimmer, I had mine running for quite a while, took up less space in the back of the tank but it was still kinda ugly. Kept my surface nice and oil free though, for $15

I don't think many people have tried that, you could give it a shot. It probably wouldn't hurt anything but try it at your own risk, it may screw up your water chemistry.
