It could be a calcium uptake problem. Stop dosing the potassium and see if that helps. Mine grow crooked when I dose extra K, the K in the KNO3 is enough for me.

Sounds scary, but I would say if your neons are fine, then your ammonia and nitirites are probably fine too as neons die very quickly with any amount of ammonia or nitrite.

That's pretty cool. I set up a 5 gallon in a window with no light or filter, I have some ferns, hygros, and anubias in it. Plants seem to be doing ok, growth is slow, but they are definitely growing.
