I've used ATI Hydro Sponges for years, and just recently upgraded to their new "Pro" sponge, which uses reticulated foam. The "Pro" allows better flow and less clogging when used with a powerhead....

I've used air driven sponges on a 55 and a 75, the biological and mechanical filtration was good, but found that using a long airstone laying along the back wall of the tank helped water circulation...

I don't find them necessary, I can look through my 30 gallon the long way and watch television with perfect clarity. The other tanks aren't placed to allow this, but are similarly transparent.

Almost any powerhead will suck the sponges flat if they are run long enough, so I suppose it depends how often you clean your sponges.

There are many, many airpumps which will run them...
