Pool filter sand is fine. As long as you use root tabs and ferts in the water column, you can grow plants in any inert substrate. Even in clown puke, epoxy coated gravel.

Looks great! I love how you used Lilaeopsis mauritiana as your foreground. It's one of the best looking grassy carpet plants for low tech setups IMO.
