If it's beta only you don't need a filter just change the water regularly. I have mine in a planted 2 gallon and he's happy as could be.

I put a check valve on it so I can adjust flow. It works well I hooked up my garden hose and turned it all the way up. The check valve allowed me to dial in the flow rate. The sand stayed suspended....
