Go figure.
And after 20 years or so on many different tanks, different tap waters.......different places...

That is Cladophora. Manual removal and get every bit you can, best to remove the wood, bleach, vinegar, Peroxide, Excel soak the wood for 5 minutes, wash well, dechlorinate(if you use that method).

FYI, for shallow and smaller nano tanks, particularly even more so for the wide types, the degassing rates for CO2 are massive, and so is the evaporation.

What happens is the water level changes...
