I have a 24oz on my 40b that has been up an running for almost a month now, and the needle hasn't moved yet. I'm not sure on the bps, but it turns my DC greenish yellow.

You could also try mixing your tap water with RO or distilled. It will take some testing to get your params right, but you won't have to buy a remineralizer.

Shouldn't have to soak it at all, as far as I know it's completely safe for aquarium use once it's dry. I'd give it at least 2-3 days to dry completely just to be safe.
