coldwater sp. for 5.5 gallon low tech
A friend of mine is taking one of my unused 5.5 gallon tanks set up with one 26 watt spiral CF light, no filter, no heater, aquasoil topped with sand. He's a cold lover himself and lives in the foggy...

great composition
That layout is really dynamic. It looks like it is moving almost, it's just totally vital. A nice use of negative space-- I wish i had your restraint, I tend to stuff plants everywhere even though I...

dwarf hairgrass
Of the two plants you mentioned I think the dwarf hairgrass would be better. Not only does it have a finer and smaller appearance, it grows more quickly and although both do better with high light I...

Wow
That stuff is absolutely stunning. I never thought of doing that...hmmm. I do scuba dive in Monterey sometimes, it would be possible to collect plants. But yikes, I've never done salt water. It seems...

fresh vs. brackish
My LFS says there are different kinds and that the tiny freshwater puffers are peaceful but the brackish kind are not. I don't have latin names on this. He also feeds tons of live california...

Hmmm, I thought Java fern didn't like being planted in the substrate. Anyway, I have the same thing going on in my tank. In the past I just waited and the plantlets came loose eventually and I'd find...

WC and wisteria
I agree about the water changes... you will probably have to do a bunch of them. But I would also throw in a ton of plants. I've found I can really increase my plant load without messing up my new...

big tank for beginners
Overstocking is so tempting when you have a small tank and it's the only one ya got. They say beginners should start with a bigger tank...maybe it's about more than water parameters. I shudder to...

fine sand
I love a fine sand tank. I've grown lots of plants that way. It is true that when I tried flourite with the sand my crypts finally spread, but they also grew larger than I wanted in some cases....

My LFS that specializes in ADA has the smaller size aqua soil powder in their shrimp tank (and also in a cory tank) and it looks better with a creature that small... the little guys can sort of do...

relax
The easy way is to not adjust your pH or KH and just see what your water turns into with some CO2 bubbled into it. If you hadn't added the phosphate buffers you could use the pH/KH chart but now you...

I don't know for sure but I bet ottos suck the snail eggs off the leaves when they are grazing algae. I've noticed that snail population tends to go down after adding fish so I'm guessing that even...

Also EI's 50% water changes may be tough on fish. I've been told fish prefer smaller (like 25%) changes. If you're going to do 50% make sure pH isn't way off... some difference due to CO2 drop is ok...

How did you acclimate the fish? My LFS reccomends a slow drip and provides homemade drip bottles for the purpose. These are a plastic water or soda bottle with the top cut off, a hole drilled or...

sand
I'm not sure what kind of sand it is, my LFS buys it somewhere and sells it in clear plastic bags. They say it is #20 size. I think it is some kind of sifted silica. The particles appear to be one...

I know fish can hear. Doesn't the noise torture them? Every HOB filter I've ever tried has noise and vibration that goes right through the glass. I'm setting up a 10 gallon. Has anyone tried any of...
