what I do with my silver dollars is that I drop in a algae wafer or two so they nibble on that instead of my plants :-p. Learned the hard way when my tiger lotus was completly gone one day lol!

Hey im kinda new myself, But from what I do know is that CO2 is for the plants to thrive, and in return the plants give Oxygen to the fish, well if you are pumping to much Co2 into the tank faster...

I heard if you do that then you need to make sure that it is free of pesticides and that you sand it down, and make sure that it gets all of the tannins out before putting into a tank.

yep my swords grow just fine in regular gravel. It just grows alot slower but I just add plant food to the substrate in my 10 gallon.

It could be the lighting to low of a light for some very high light plants, It could be the ph of your water choking them out. Also plants need food and the ablity to breath which would be CO2 like...
