My Nova 48" dual bulb is great, plenty bright enough and durable. I've been using it for fish and turtles for a bit over the past 4 1/2 years without a hiccup

Do a 40% to 50% weekly. That'll keep more fresh water rotating and hopefully get rid of that smell. I do a 40% on my 55 weekly and I have no smell.

I've never herd of anyone doing that, but I mount mine vertical in the back corner. Gives the whole depth of the tank some flow!
