syringe is not enough pressure to force it out. these diffusers are set to high pressure around 30-50psi. just hook it up on the co2 tubing and let it run few minutes it should force the water out...

they should be mainly aggressive when they breed and protect the spawn. A lot of breaking point in the aquarium might help, hiding places are good idea too. not sure about the nipping tough
