There's a great deal on Craigslist but it's a former hamster cage. Is there any reason why it would be bad for fish once cleaned well?

I'm pretty sure his markings can vary from minute to minute, as they tend to be lighter when he is more relaxed but darker if he's being more "aggressive"?
