I like the Seachem Nitrite and Nitrate test kit. They provide a reference sample for validation too. You can pick this kit up on Amazon for a good price.

Get the API; GH and KH water test and stop guessing on what ratio of RO to tap water to use, for the fish and plants you will be keeping. Anyone's input on the right ratio is simply a guess.
