The lily pipes are acrylic so just a random saw should do the trick. I also did this in another shrimp tank and shellie tank with tiny babies and it works great.

I didn't say it WON'T carpet, I said it wasn't suitable for the foreground. His tank looks small from the pics so trying to maintain a HG carpet would be ill advised especially being new to planted...

It could have been that onefang and I got a bad batch high in silicates as we purchased the bags a month or so apart. I haven't seen anyone else that uses Controsoil mention anything crazy diatoms...

I know you said you just added new plants, but anything else in the last month or so? Especially new substrate? I had horrible diatoms like yours and mine were caused by high silicates in the soil.
