Wasn't as worried about it in this bowl as much as the little one in my signature. Hear ya on the sword too. I planted them after bowl was full so I should be able to trim it I think.

It might actually be too MUCH light. I had the same problem on a 10 gal with the same plants. I cut back the wattage of my CFL and raised the light, and everything bounced back.

Your using commercial substrate with gravel it looks like. You can do it, but not sure a gravel "cap" will not end up mixed in the end. Prob better to just mix it, but might not look the best!

Every time I have tried 23w cfl on my 10's, half the plants went crazy, and a bunch get fried. Have to find that sweet spot for the species mix.

Just set this one up about an hour ago. Thinking about doing low light plants and moss, and seeing what some shrimp will do. Just a piece of spider wood, moss ball, and a sword in there for today.
