I had Otos in my shrimp tank for a while and it worked out just fine. Shrimp bred like little bunnies and the glass was a lot cleaner than it is now (that the Otos are in another tank).

Mine do just fine in pretty hard water. pH is 7.8 or so once the tap water has mellowed (way over 8.0 out of the tap) and around 6.9-7.0 in the tank due to co2 injection.
