I have the exact lighting you're talking about and it has wire extenders that come out from the side and rest on the rim of the tank. I certainly wouldn't trust a cat on it though. My tank is open...

Good luck finding females! Maybe it was just me, but it seems like all I ended up with were males. When getting them young it's a bit hard to differentiate between the sexes.

Well, it's this style hood (we got it from Home Depot). It's just one big reflector basically for 4 bulbs. I guess if it's too much light I could just remove a bulb. Ignore the white t-12 lighting...
