You could try using 2 stainless self tapping screws to hold down a "bridge"
or "strap" over the bushing housing taking the place of the broken tab.

I'm using a dual T8 48" fixture on top of my 125. Its providing plenty of light for the Java Fern and the Crypts that are directly underneath it.

You can tell the light tapers off at the ends...

You can trim the leaves. They will just yellow and decay like others have stated. Better to pluck em.
