My vote is for the solution you mentioned but wanted to avoid: Get another 2.5 glass top, have it cut down by 2" or so along the long edge, then attach a cut-down plastic lip from a larger size hood....

Sounds like I don't need to worry about it much, particularly if I can try to target 78-79 deg. F. as the tank's temperature.
