The water seems very cloudy. The plants look ok. The bacterial bloom that I think is responsible for the cloudiness should eat through its food supply and disappear.

I had a Ruffled Sword, was using a Root Tab 1-3 months. When I used a potting soil substrate it went nuts, and when I started fertilizing even more so.

I do 50% water changes once a week and I don't see any mini-cycles. There are lots of bacteria in the tank and on the plants. Could you elaborate please, I really don't know what you're getting at.

My theory, which is called the In-situ theory, is that since there are no plastic filters in nature, the tank should do better with the bacteria on structures in the tank and not out in the filter.

I think the chlorinator idea is good. Personally, I just wash the sponges out in the sink and I don't have any biomedia at all. Don't particularly want bacteria in the filter.
