No, a blackout for a few days shouldn't kill your plants. Make sure you do a large water change before and after otherwise the excess nutrients in your aquarium will bring the green water right back.

Excel is an excellent option IMO. I use it exclusively in my lower light tanks, and for spot killing algae in my higher light tanks. It just gives me a headache every time I have to buy a jug of it...

Yeah, syringes with airline stuck on the tip works great. I know my dose down the the tenth of a milliliter, if that would make much of a difference in a 40 gallon aquarium. Ha!

I've never had a whole lot of luck with that style of reactor, honestly. I've gone back to a high pressure diffuser underneath...
