IMO, you could increase your neons and CPDs. If your tank is planted and you keep up with water changes shouldn't be any issues.

Have you looked into Staurogyne repens? I use it as a carpet in my tank and it looks/grows great. Just a thought for something that may be more forgiving and still look and carpet well.
