I haven't moved them or done anything else to the tank. I only used maybe 3 or 4 root tabs for a 26 gallon. I am wondering if maybe I put them too close to the plants

You could also try pygmy cories. They stay at the bottom most of the time but when they swim up for air its super cute. I kept 12 with my shrimp and never had a problem

I only use alum now. 3 tablespoons to 1 gallon of slightly warmer water and let it sit for 2 hours. Kills everything.

That is not the shrimps saddle. Those are the shrimps swimerettes. (Someone will need to tell you the proper name) This appears to be a berries shrimp. As the eggs develop they get bigger and bigger....
