I have had SAEs for over 10 years and none of them have ever been aggressive. They do get large but a 55 gal is plenty of room for 5 of them. They are social fish and like company of their own kind....

My CPDs do this to pieces that are too large. When they spit them out, the pieces break up into smaller pieces and then they can eat them. Maybe your fish do the same thing.
