The Tek lights are pre-wired, but if you choose to DIY, they use the triad ballast which you can wire up only 1 bulb per ballast if you wish. The Tek lights use the Triad ballast from my understanding

I totally agree. Except I'm using IceCap 660's to overdrive the T5's instead of the triad ballast the TEK hood uses. I've tried both and the IceCaps look a lot brighter on the same type of bulbs side...

The whole hype about T5's was about the High Output bulbs with using a quality reflector because it reflects about 300% more light into the tank.

I got a 50 gallon tank too, it wasn't called breeder though. It has a center brace unlike the breeders. Apparently they do not make the 50 gallon tanks without the center brace anymore. 36"x18"x18"...
