Got some really nice java fern growing on some wood. I can't really grow moss, the fishes tear it all up. Any suggestion for a smaller leaved plant that will grow and spread on wood?

Yeah, I think the retrofit is a good idea to start. I still have two 24" T5HO's that I am planning to keep. My hood is custom built (by Me) so I have options there....

I cycled my aquarium a couple years ago I used straight ammonia and seeding with regular tank enzyme from the lfs. I had water sprite, moss, and moneywort. All survived the fishless cycle just fine.

Bacopa australis (http://www.flowgrow.de/db/aquaticplants/bacopa-australis) does this wonderfully. I've weighted down stems or pushed them into substrate and shoots grow off.
