I agree that priming mechanisms are a likely point of failure and I don't use them on my SunSun or my Eheim Pros. On my Eheim Classics, I just turn off the valve before I disconnect and clean the...

I've always thought that Prime (or Safe, its powdered and cheaper Seachem sibling) did the job as well as it can be done. On top of that, those are very inexpensive. So it's never been a question...

Eheim Classics are dead quiet. The Cobalt EXT canister (about $100 at Ken's) has a separate pump, which you can place in the tank, so it's completely silent.

You can get a Cobalt EXT at Kens for about $100. Easiest canister out there, at least in my experience. And I have lots of Eheims, too, although I usually buy them used.

I might even go for a 2217. I like Eheims, but I don't run a 2213 on anything bigger than a 30 gallon tank.

For o-rings, I've gotten suitable replacements at the local hardware store.

For other parts, I've used Ken's or Big Als.

I'd just throw them in. If they've been sitting dry, I can't imagine they would be harmful. If you boil them, you're going to remove tannins and other beneficial compounds.

Water conditioners typically reduce the oxygen in the tank. A 3x dose is probably okay, but you should keep an eye on your fish to make certain that they do not exhibit signs of oxygen depletion. ...

The Cobalt EXT filter is pretty short, so might work in your cabinet.

Sounds right. I did this calculation a few years back, using Ken's prices, and found that Safe cost about 1/10 as much as Prime. And Prime is a bargain compared to other products.

A friend...

Yup

All good points. The use of a prefilter will also reduce the need to clean the canister, but you'll have to clean the prefilter.

Yup

+1, except that I don't premix Safe. I just put a 1/4 teaspoon into my 55 gallon before refilling. No need to premix, unless you're putting it in small tanks and need to measure very small amounts.

I've used an Ollociip on my iPhone 4S. It's great for close up of objects close to the glass, like eggs or shrimp. Can't speak for the iPhone 6 product, but I bet it's good.
