Not quite the same thing but you could always attach the moss ball to a suction cup and put that midway up the tank. You should be able to set it up so you can barely see the suction cup.

Putting an airstone in really helps me. I turn the air on at night every 2-3 days. If I leave it off for a few days the surface scum builds up. I turn the air on overnight and voila, it's gone.
