Yes, it works. I have raised my odessa barbs in a Fluval Chi (they spawned in the 55g, but I collected the eggs and fry and put them in the Chi).

I would still recommend replacing the stock filter...

Thanks. Amazon lists the CF300 as 14 x 9 x 9.5 inches, but I guess that's the size of the packaging - which is completely useless information !

Well actually, you get less surface disturbance compared to having the sponge filter on its own, since most of the bigger bubbles don't get a chance to reach the surface.
