I don't think you have to much light. I know that Amano uses ample light on all his nano tanks but you might want to play around with the photo period in order to avoid algae outbreaks.

Did you do tests when you put them in the tank? My guess is that when you first put the fish in there was an ammonia spike that burned there gills, like was said up above.

Though i have no personal experience with hygro, I know that lots of plants out there don't do well in discus like temperatures.

You can grow about any plant emersed as long as there is enough precipitation, though i am sure there are ones out there that cant be grown emersed.

You were right in the aspect the amount of o2 in the water reflects how much co2 is in it. but you missed the boat in you're thinking that oxygen is poisonous to plants. oxygen isnt a waste product...

But a new 10 gallon would be easy to get. they are only 12...
