I agree with all the previous posters. Glass diffusers work really well with DIY setups. I'm running 2L bottles and glass diffusers on 4 tanks with no problems other than the pain of mixing new yeast...

I have these clip on light setup on the majority of my tanks. Very cheap but strong light. I usually just clip the lights on to the back rim of the tank with some of the clip below the water surface.

There's no way you can scratch your glass from filling. If some how you end up scraping the glass with the sand and some pressure then of course it will scratch. It is sand after all.....
