Dormant suggests a state of being alive with little to no growth. The dark green (dormant as suggested) is growing at the same rate as the suggested "non dormant" riccia (bright green).

I do not since use active substrates like aquasoil that contain plenty of nutrients for plants initially. Also the ammonia leach provides plenty of nitrogen for the DSM plants.
