This is anecdotal, but my experience supports low nitrates as a contributing factor.

I have a 55 gallon with a red reared slider turtle. They dump tons of waste. I eventually set up the old 55...

I had ghost shrimp housed with my RCS. They were from PetSmart and looked like the picture Solceiolo Lawerncia posted.

I've got two connected 55 gallon tanks. One houses a Red Eared Slider turtle and black neon tetras. The other is a planted refugium with red cherry shrimp and cories. Both are pool sand substrate.

I decreased lighting, and shifted the basking platform so the 160 watt UVB basking light didn't spill into the tank as much. I've not had BGA issues since then.

And, yes, my goal was nitrate...

I have a 55 gallon refugium on my 55 gallon tank. My refugium is actually the planted tank. The main tank contains a red eared slider turtle, which are known for their prodigious waste production.

I've got pool filter sand. Larger grains and probably less likely to have nutrients. In my 55 with RCS, I have hygrophila and amazon sword. I use Flourish root tabs and have for 1.5 years. I do not...

We had two. Now down to one that we've had nearly two years and was full grown when we got it.

The only time I don't see fanning is after the monthly canister filter cleaning.

Or, assassins grow slowly. I wanted MTS for turning the substrate, but ended up with too many. We're talking hundreds. I added 3 assassins. They definitely killed some, but weren't keeping up after...

Assassins do dig, but they mostly dig in and sit. If you are looking for substrate turnover, MTS are a better choice. The assassins will wipe out your pond snail infestation, though.

Bamboo shrimp are filter feeders. They find a place with good water flow, sit in it, and open their fans to the flow. You'll see them fanning, and wiping their fans against their mouth.

If it's...

Anti-snail chemicals placed on the plants at some point?

Where did the plants come from and how long have you had them?

This!

I've had neon tetras and RCS for a year and three or four months. For the most part, the neons ignore the adults, but they definitely go after young. I've also got a heavily planted jungle...

Which is what I love about it. Of course, I feed it to my turtle twice a week. She gets fresh plants that she would eat in the wild, and it sucks the nitrates out of the tank.

It also sticks to...

Breeding will be very difficult, especially with the fish. Some ghost shrimp larvae need brackish water, others don't. But, all hatch as free swimming larvae that feed on plankton. Your fish will...

I have one on a 20 long. I'd say as long as you have a high flow area, they don't move that much. We had two as well, but one passed after a bit over a year. It was already nearly three inches when...

Mini ramshorn breeding/eggs?

Ok, if it hadn't been for recent threads about mini ramshorns, I'd have no idea what I saw tonight.

I'm curious where they lay their eggs, because I think that most ramshorns lay above the...

That Canon 50mm/f1.8 is a very nice lens for fish pictures. With the large aperture, you can make very low light shots. Of course, with a wide open aperture, the depth of field is tiny, so plan on...
