The red cinder we get here is typically around 1/2" and larger sized pieces, with some smaller stuff. The black is typically under 1/2".

Cinder is another name for the lava rock in your link. Cinder is formed from volcanic activity, quite a lot out here. There is typically black and red available, black tends to be smaller.

Cheaper in the long run and probably just as effective. Only concern would be if you happen not to like the color temp of the Planted+ as its not adjustable.
