I have a 2.5g tank next to a window and Guppy grass grows well in it/w 3 hrs direct sunlight each day + gets indirect light anytime the sun is up.

I'd say yes, but this fixture, being made for salt water tanks is too strong to use directly on top of the tank. I'd say at about 15-17" up from the top of the gravel.

Sounds like you have a 29g tank(?). Only 2" less in height sound...

will eventually fill in between the grains of the sub and turn into fertilizers. But that takes months after...
