I've also seen people wrap screens around their lights to reduce PAR. I may do that to combat hair algae issues in my tank.

Yeah, you can pick new leaves and then lay them out to dry until they're brown. I don't think sterilization is necessary, especially when you collect them yourself and know where they've been....

I think pretty much any moss will work in this setup, including fissidens. Most species will also benefit from the cooler water conditions.

If there are a lot of debris attached to the rocks I think boiling them would be your best bet. If not, then a good rinse in hot water would probably suffice.

You may run into the issue of detritus buildup using large river rocks as the only substrate; I would recommend adding something smaller underneath it.
