Is there a reason you want to change substrate?... You can do it, but it takes a little work....

I usually keep my substrate dept around 3" or a little deeper for slopes, I try not to go over 4" deep. I would think for a 75G tank that 2-3 bags should do it.

When the water hardness kept rising in my 55g tank the culprit was the Petsmart gravel. I took some out and tested it with vinager, it bubbled, so it was leaching, changed substrate, problem solved.

Once I started using pool filter sand, I switched all my tanks over to it. I've never had a problem with it compacting. To me it is easier to plant in and holds the plants down better than gravel....
