having at least a 40 to 55 gallon would be the smallest tank because they can get big. as for tankmates I've had bolivian rams when they were smaller with green severums and tons of other cichlids....

you could do rummy nose tetras, Sawbwa resplendens, and cardinal tetras with some rams bolivan or german. only thing is after the tank is cycled you would want to stock the cardinals first for them...
