Just to clarify that this kind of blue is visible only with very bright light. I have them in 2 different tanks with 2 WPG T5HO bulbs and they look very dark blue...

Are you using Prime to "fix" tap water?
If yes it lower Oxygen in the water. Do you have Purigen in the filters? If yes you should use only Prime because it make bad reaction with API water...

Adding baking soda even in very small amounts...

Adding baking soda even in very small amounts should affect the PH.
In 40 gal tank with RO and PH 5.2 adding 1/4 teaspoon soda will raise PH to 6.

Probably your test kit ar PH meter is bad.Ask me how I know.

Malaysian trumpet snails are the best substrate cleaners.They stick deep in it and eat all the debris and left over foods.They prevent forming gas pockets too.
