The brown stuff is called tannins. Sometimes boiling the wood several times will get rid of most of it before putting it into your tank. I've also seen some folks recommend Seachem Purigen to help...

It looks nice the way it is but it might look cool with petite anubias or covered in moss. I don't have experience with very many plants yet so I can't recommend anything crazy :)

Thanks guys, now I know where the road I have started down leads. Just started in the hobby in November and I now have two tanks so I guess I'm on pace to start about 6 new tanks per year lol.

My yellow apple snail cleaned off a piece of driftwood about a foot long in a day or two. Before I added the snail the wood had tons of white fungus on it.
