Having enough food would have been my suggestion. If the fish are harassing the snails, they'll just move about half under cover in their shells instead of hanging out in all their glory. :)

If I'm worried about sucking up shrimplets, I do so into a bucket, then pour off the water into a sink with a net handy. Pour slowly and you should be able to pick out the shrimplets pretty easily...
