I'd say go for it. Those plants look like low light plants in the pic. Vals in the back, looks like some crypts in the corners and mosses/ferns on the wood.

What didn't you like about it? I have a ceramic disc now. I can't do an atomizer because I have aquariumplants regulator and it doesn't have a high enough working pressure for an atomizer.

You could do that, but the part that sticks out of the water will usually turn brown and dry out from the dry air.

If you can afford it, I would say do the whole tank with aquasoil or a comparable alternative. I believe the sand you want to cap with will end up settling to the bottom, so it will not work for you...

Can't really see it in your pic, but they bend towards the light. If your light is mounted on the rim, the tops of the plants that aren't directly under the light bend towards it.
