I'd start at 8 or 9 and work up to 12 over a few weeks sometimes pushing the lights too long at the beginning when the plants are just starting to grow can cause algae.

Haha that's quite true, however I always just assumed for florescent tubes the wpg rule could be used as a guideline, while for other methods like MH, SV, PC and LED it was obviously not functional....

Mine grows quite quick about an inch a day when it gets near the higher light in my tank. I dose EI, have a 75 gallon with 4 54 watt t5's Mind you only 3 are working right now, And heavy co2.
