I've used plasti-dip as my aquarium background and it works great.

I used a little over 1 can to get a nice coat on the back of my 55g.

in my 55 gallon, I ran a dirt capped with gravel, moving plants and clearing unwanted new sprouts always pulled some dirt up to the top layers.
