IME I just stick the trimmings from both emersed...

IME I just stick the trimmings from both emersed and immersed grown stems directly into the substrate of my emersed setup and they grow just fine.

I'm keeping four in water that is about 10-12 dKH and 7-9 dGH. They've been in there for a month and a half and seem healthy as can be.

From what I've gathered it's best not to filter with carbon in a planted tank, I'm not sure but I imagine that it will remove the ferts as well as other beneficial chemicals for the plants.

Cabomba is pretty easy, just cut and stick it in the substrate. As long as you don't chop it up too small. I usually cut mine down to about 2-3 inches, and then just stick all the cuttings anywhere...
